BafterC Volume 6 Number 1
The Barlow Response Unit
Guest Edited by Kemeny Babineau
Welcome to the Barlow Response Unit (BRU). The BRU has been assembled to acknowledge poet John Barlow. Working together John and I have selected some pieces from an unpublished manuscript in progress, Safe Telepathy 3. As you may already know John is a prolific and sometimes brilliant writer. In the evenings after work he likes to settle down at his computer and relax into free flowing associative typing of email letters, blogs and endless group conversations; from his apartment on Howland Avenue in Toronto John’s consciousness streams out to others worldwide. John writes as he thinks, broadly, maniacally, humourously; his best writing is beyond bounds, he can be at once real and surreal, reasoned and irrational, even brilliant and quotidian. Like bill bissett before him, who was a “one-man civilization,” and like Walt Whitman well before that who confessed to containing multitudes, John Barlow also contains multitudes, or multi-attitudes or multi-altitudes.
Each contributor to the BRU received the same selected writing of John’s. What they were asked to do was read the work and then exercise their Automatic Response Ability, to respond in kind to John’s writing by emulating his method – which is Automatic, and which in turn is an attempt to unite the beginning with the end, to work oneself up to a human humm of words laid down perfectly or nearly perfectly the first time through, but also to realize that this is merely an attempt; there are always revisions of visions.
